History and Origins of Global Higher Education

placeholder-image

Program Description

Traditional Educational Leadership courses often have a U.S. focus. However, colleges and universities began long before 1636, when the first college opened in the U.S. (Harvard). In this course, we will visit three of the oldest continuously operating colleges and learn about their history, development, and influences on U.S. higher education. After exploring three of the oldest continuously operating colleges in the world (University of Bologna and Oxford and Cambridge in the United Kingdom), we will reflect on how global education shaped U.S. higher education, what similarities U.S. institutions share with our global institutions visited, what differences make these institutuions unique, and how social, political, and cultural impacts have influenced higher education locally and abroad.Ìý
