The õ Libraries and the Jewish Cultural Society at FAU will present Aaron Kula’s nine-member Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra (KCJO) for a concert of traditional and beloved Klezmer tunes. The “Traditions! Traditions! Bulgars, Freilachs and Shers” concert will take place on Sunday, Dec.18 at 3 p.m. at the Barry and Florence Friedberg Learning Auditorium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
KCJO will perform upbeat tunes and waltzes from the Jewish Sheet Music Collection in the FAU Libraries’ Special Collections. These tunes originated from Europe and were played by great Klezmer musicians, including Dave Tarras, Naftule Brandwein, Ziggy Elman and Abe Ellstein. KCJO will improvise and jazz-up the “old world” Klezmer tunes in the style reminiscent of klezmer bands from the 1920s -1950s. Some of the songs that will be performed include “Yossel Yossel,” “Tum Balalaika,” “Shein Vi D’ L’vone,” “Oyfn Pripichek,” “Russian Sher,” “Tarra’s Freilach” and “Der Heyser Bulgar.”
“Playing traditional Klezmer tunes from the past is always great fun for the band and the audience because the only purpose of the music is to make people happy,” said Kula.
Audiences also will see their favorite KCJO musicians, including violinist Randi Fishenfeld, trumpeter Chaim Rubinov, saxophonist Scott Klarman and trombonist David Levitan.
Admission to the concert is free for FAU students with an OWL card; $45 for the general public; $35 for Jewish Cultural Society members; and $60 for Jewish Cultural Society couple members. To purchase tickets, visit or contact James Drayton at 561-297-2186 or jewishculturalsociety@fau.edu.
This concert is sponsored by FAU Libraries and the Jewish Cultural Society at FAU, a volunteer support organization whose mission is to advance Jewish cultural traditions and education at FAU libraries through philanthropic endeavors and programs. Donations to the Jewish Cultural Society and the FAU Libraries are encouraged. Cash, checks and major credit cards are accepted for donations.
